100 YEARS OF OUR CLUB 1925/2025
THE S.I.A. is the specialized company recognized by the E.N.C.I. (National Body of Italian Dog Lovers) and therefore by the F.C.I. (Federation Cinologique Internationale) which has the statutory task of carrying out every most efficient action to improve, increase and enhance the Great Dane breed in its varieties and strengthen the section and breeding.
It is, obviously, a non-profit association that carries out multiple activities, summarized below, managed by a Board of Directors elected by the Members, according to the rules of the Statute.
It is therefore good to clarify that it is a club and that those who administer it do so for pure fun and passion, without perceiving anything. There are therefore no offices or employees, anyone who works for the S.I.A. he does it in his free time and without getting anything in return. Nonetheless, it is essential that the various social activities are carried out with the utmost order and rigor, in compliance with the E.N.C.I. regulations. and laws.
The Italian Great Dane Society is one of the oldest clubs in the history of Italian dog breeding. It was born in the 1920s at the behest of passionate gentlemen breeders or lovers of the breed, to popularize, protect and improve it. They were true pioneers, in an era in which the purebred dog was reserved for a few, and the Great Dane for very few, certainly not being of little pretension. Since the 1930s, the SIA, under the presidency of the illustrious judge and breeder Count Carlo Brasavola di Massa, has been committed to promoting the purebred Great Dane and published a beautiful, and now very rare, monograph full of photos of the best dogs of the era, today very useful for following the evolution of the selection.
The Second World War also dealt a severe blow to dog breeding, which began with difficulty to make up for lost time in the 1950s. We had to wait over twenty years to see the Italian Great Dane Society reborn.
In November 1972, a few Alan fans full of fervor and good will met in Milan and decided that the association had to return to its former glory. In February of the following year the first meeting was called and Dr. was elected President. Bernardo Motta, at that time the most illustrious and well-known among Italian Alanists.
Over the past thirty years the progress of the association has been enormous, from 20-30 initial members we have reached over 500, an evolution that has gone hand in hand with the enormous increase in the diffusion of the breed in our country. The road has not always been smooth and the club has had to overcome difficult moments, but it can currently boast reassuring stability and an organization that is bearing good fruit.
